Indiana Mariachi Project

Founded by Iván Maceda in 2025, the Indiana Mariachi Project is a nonprofit organization mainly dedicated to promoting and preserving mariachi culture by providing free/low-cost music education rooted in mariachi traditions, as well music performances. Based in southern Indiana, we prioritize serving underserved communities while welcoming learners of all ages and backgrounds to participate. Through instruction in instruments, vocal performance, and collaborative music-making, we use mariachi as a framework for teaching discipline, confidence, teamwork, and emotional growth. Our programs also introduce participants to a rich musical tradition that fosters cultural understanding, respect, and appreciation. By removing barriers to participation and centering community connection, we aim to strengthen lives through the transformative power of music.

Why Mariachi?

Mariachi is a dynamic and highly collaborative music tradition that brings together instrumental performance, vocal technique, listening skills, and ensemble coordination into a single, immersive learning experience. Because it is both structured and expressive, it provides students with a clear pathway to develop discipline, teamwork, and musical literacy while also encouraging creativity and personal expression.

As a teaching model, mariachi is especially effective for engaging learners in active, hands-on music-making from the very beginning. Students learn by participating in a shared ensemble environment where every role matters, helping them build confidence, responsibility, and a sense of belonging through music.

Beyond its educational strengths, mariachi also offers meaningful exposure to a rich cultural tradition that has evolved across generations and communities. Engaging with this tradition helps students develop broader cultural awareness and appreciation, while also deepening their understanding of how music connects people across backgrounds and experiences.
